چکیده

An analytical expression for the shape of the capillary menis, R formed around a vertical cylinder or spherical particle near a vertical wall is derived by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The forces of capillary interaction bctwccn the particle (cylinder) and the wall arc calculated. The resulting expressions are valid when the distance bctwecn the particle (cylinder) and the wall, as well as the particle radius, are much smaller than the capillary length. This range corresponds to colloidal and micron-size particles. The theory predicts attraction bctwccn such a particlc and the wall. The results can be useful for a better understanding of proccsscs such as surface coagulation and two-dimensional ordering of colloidal particles or protein molcculcs attached to a fluid intcrfacc. Kq+\~ords: Asymptotic expansions; capillary meniscus forces: microparticlcs.

Modeling and investigating the effect of ultrasound waves pressure on the microbubble oscillation dynamics in microvessels containing an incompressible fluid (Research Article)

Understanding the dynamics of microbubble oscillation in an elastic microvessel is important for the safe and effective applications of ultrasound contrast agents in imaging and therapy. Numerical simulations based on 2D finite element model are performed to investigate the effect of acoustic parameters such as pressure and frequency on the dynamic interaction of the fluid-blood-vessel system. ...

The atomic detail of an evaporating meniscus

Atomistic simulations of a simple Lennard-Jones fluid are used to investigate the very near-wall dynamics and thermodynamics of evaporating menisci. The specific configuration considered is a two-dimensional sin the meand liquid drop centered on a cold spot on an atomically smooth solid wall with evaporating menisci extending from it onto hotter regions of the wall. In the four cases simulated,...

A test of the air-seeding hypothesis using sphagnum hyalocysts.

"Air-seeding" is a proposed mechanism for the initiation of water stress embolism in dead plant cells. During air-seeding, external air is drawn into the lumen of a dead plant cell through a pore or crack in the cell wall. The resulting bubble may expand to fill the lumen, thus embolizing the cell. The data presented confirm that Sphagnum hyalocysts can embolize by air-seeding when the pressure...

Capillary interactions between particles bound to interfaces, liquid films and biomembranes.

This article is devoted to an overview, comparison and discussion of recent results (both theoretical and experimental) about lateral capillary forces. They appear when the contact of particles or other bodies with a fluid phase boundary causes perturbations in the interfacial shape. The capillary interaction is due to the overlap of such perturbations which can appear around floating particles...

Geometry-induced phase transition in fluids: capillary prewetting.

We report a new first-order phase transition preceding capillary condensation and corresponding to the discontinuous formation of a curved liquid meniscus. Using a mean-field microscopic approach based on the density functional theory we compute the complete phase diagram of a prototypical two-dimensional system exhibiting capillary condensation, namely that of a fluid with long-ranged dispersi...
